Marian tried to ignore Lucifer even more, but it wasn't working. He tried to remind himself that Lucifer didn't know anything about Dago, but still. Lucifer wasn't stupid, after all, and Marian was worried about what he was figuring out, especially if it meant bad news for him and Dago.
Marian didn't need any more bad news to deal with that night.
Marian stepped back when the Morning Star child lept over the counter. He wasn't sure what he could do; his magic was useless there. . Fuck, he hated being so useless. A part of his brain wondered if Lucifer had set this all up on purpose, just so that Marian would feel this way. He didn't doubt it; that was a Lucifer-like thing to do.
He focused on the counter and it blew up. Marian hoped that if the force didn't do anything- And it probably wouldn't- Then at least the shards of wood might.

Lucifer was only bluffing at this point, but it still had the desired effect. There was a bit more hushed giggling from his end.
Dago stepped back when Marian exploded the counter. The man at the counter seemed unaffected, though a bit annoyed. Just as Marian predicted, the explosion itself didn’t hurt either of the demons, the remains of the counter sprayed across the room. Dago threw up his arms in front of his face, trying not to lose and eye or something due to a stray splinter. The Morning Star child got quite a lot of wood in the back, and did its best to try to scratch it off.
Dago rushed forward and slammed his elbow in the Morning Star child’s ribs. The demon was much bigger than he was, but the distracted demon still doubled over in pain. This was a fight that was going to suck very badly, even if this hideous thing was distracted.
“Oh, I think I forgot something,” Lucifer said suddenly, “I was too busy watching your guard dog try to protect you. There is a door to your left, it’s a closet, open it and go in.”

Marian's eyes narrowed. Well, that confirmed his other suspicion: That the man at the counter was also a pride demon. Seriously, what the hell was this place, anyway? Aside from just being a seedy hotel. Marian didn't even know where this place was, but he was afraid it was somewhere in the pride circle of Hell. Oh dear. Well, that wasn't a good thing, if it were true. .
Marian cringed at watching Dago fight the Morning Star child. He almost wished he'd been allowed more help; he would have brought along another aggressive mage. He wasn't sure if they'd be able to handle this thing, though. Shit shit shit.
His eyes widened when he heard Lucifer's advice. "You son of a bitch," he muttered to Lucifer before running over to the closet. "Dago, get over here!" he yelled before opening the closet door to jump in. Of course Lucifer had 'forgot' to mention it. Right.

Dago glanced over his shoulder to see what Marian was yelling about. He made a dash for the door, but it slammed shut on its own, trapping Marian inside. It made a small click noise; it locked. Dago had to skid to a stop to avoid running straight into the door. He banged and yelled, but the sound was muffled to a point where he was unintelligible.
“Ah ah ah,” said Lucifer, “You don’t get help with this one, Marian.”
A light flickered on and there was a shelf with a thin purple knife and a small bottle of white liquid.
“You have two choices; that knife will immediately kill that monstrosity, but will cut the user in the same place. Stab it in the side, it dies, you get stabbed in the side and only have a nasty cut. The only thing that will prevent that is that potion next to it. Remember that potion I made you take for your useful life raft out there? You mix the two potions, you’ll be strong enough to break down the door, but once it wears off, you won’t be able to walk for twelve hours,” Lucifer informed him, “The knife can fit under the door, the potion can’t. Either take the potion and sacrifice your ability to walk or pass the knife to your oh-so-trusting friend and you better hope he doesn’t stab my over-sized child in the heart.”
The banging on the door quieted down for a few moments, “You better make a decision before you can’t,” reminded Lucifer with a bit of a chuckle in his voice.

Marian grit his teeth and grabbed the knife, trying to figure out which option to take. He doubted Lucifer would be so nice as to make the rest of his demands be in less than half an hour, so he couldn't take the white potion, but he also couldn't risk Dago's existence. . There had to be another option. There was never only two options.
He turned around and inspected the door. Wood, and it was obviously pretty thick. "Well, here goes nothing," he said for the second time that night, hoping that this time would have better consequences. He threw it upwards a little, above where Dago's head would be but not too high, and pushed it through the door with his magic, making sure that the knife was perpendicular to the door at all times. He didn't want it to bend, after all.
Once it finally got through, it fell to the floor behind Dago. "Don't stab it in the heart!" Marian shouted, knowing his voice would get through due to the hole in the door. "It'll hurt you wherever you stab it, but the knife will kill it, so stab it in the side!"

“Holy shit!” Dago swore as the knife whizzed past his head.
It clattered about five feet away from him. He was trying to push the Morning Star child off of the door and away from him. Its head was too far up to see him, but it saw Marian go through the closet. He summoned up all of his strength and shoved the Morning Star child away from the door. He didn’t understand what he hell Marian was talking about, but he said the knife would kill it. He had to get to that knife!
He ran over to the knife and grabbed it off the floor. The Morning Star child charged at him, but Dago led with his knife and stabbed it just below it’s misshapen ribs. He felt a stabbing just below his ribs, too.
“Fuck!” he swore, immediately letting go of the knife. So that’s what Marian fucking meant!
The Morning Star child was dead the moment the knife passed his body. The moment Dago let go, it fell to the ground. Dago clutched his side, pulling away his hand to see that he was bleeding. He swore again, but moved over to the closet door. He tried the knob; it was locked, just as before.
“Stand back,” he called through the hole.
He put both hands on the hole that Marian made and ripped the door off its hinges. There was silence on Lucifer’s end.

Marian stood back against the shelf as Dago forced the door open. He finally exhaled when he saw Dago standing on the other side, in one piece. Thank god. He moved over to Dago. "Are you alright?" he asked, uncharacteristically concerned. He knew Lucifer would be pissed at him, but whatever. Dago wasn't dead and Marian could walk, and that was what was important.
After asking if Dago was alright, his face gained a smug expression. So he'd outsmarted Lucifer twice tonight, at least. That was a record and Marian felt himself worthy of bragging rights, but this really wasn't the time or place for that. Oh well, this night was going better than Marian could have hoped for.
"Hmm, now what now. .?" Marian asked, pushing his glasses up. Lucifer was being quiet, so Marian had no idea what to do. Well, he'd find out soon, or assume that meant he was finished.

Dago immediately put his hand back over his injury, though it was already starting to feel better. The maintenance guy he’d accidentally run into while in the museum had become lunch, so he was already healing up.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he said, with another wince, “That hurt like a bitch though. Give me a minute and it’ll be fine.”
There was a sudden white noise inside of Marian’s head, but it quickly went away, “Get the heart,” someone that wasn’t Lucifer said suddenly.
There was a crash on Lucifer’s end and the sound went silent again.
“Do we go the fuck home?” Dago half-complained, “You still can’t tell me what the hell’s going on, right?”
As far as Dago knew, Marian was talking to him; little did he know. He straightened up a little bit, seemingly feeling much better from the stab wound he received.
“Passive mage, huh?” came Lucifer’s voice, “You’re going to pay for that little bit of ingenuity, my pet.”
Lucifer went silent again.

"That's good," Marian said, frowning. God, he wished that they could go back now, and not have to deal with any of this ever again, but he knew that they couldn't. Lucifer still had more planned, and Marian had to do it. Besides, he couldn't quit now. It was too late in the game and he'd risked something happening to both him and Dago too many times to just leave and have it all be for nothing.
He shook his head. "I wish," he said. "But we can't. Not yet."
He walked over to the Morning Star child's corpse and took the purple knife inside of it. He cut into its chest, and pulled out its heart, cringing. "What the hell am I supposed to do with this?" he muttered. Lucifer's words about how he would pay for what he'd done made him cringe even more, as did Lucifer calling him his 'pet.'

Dago watched Marian do his thing with a bit of a strange look on his face. Blood and organs weren’t really something that bothered him, but he just didn’t understand why he was doing that. He didn’t say anything, figuring whatever the fuck was going on, he’d find out eventually.
“You are less than a mile from the Gluttony circle of hell,” Lucifer’s low and now very serious voice said, “Go there and ask for the head chef. Her name is Moggnigua. Tell her that you want the largest glass of angelic ambrosia; the king’s glass. If she argues, give her the heart of an insolent child.”
Lucifer failed to mention that the kitchen hands would be aggressive and wouldn’t believe they were looking for Moggnigua or that Moggnigua would want to eat them. He thought it would be their problem to deal with, especially after Marian disobeyed.
