Lilith shook her head, “They didn’t and that isn’t quite the correct term any how,” she said gently, “This place has been around much longer than that. Mammon is the Lord of Greed, hence why money would be important to his property and also why we don’t use currency around here. People have long memories and money simply mucks up our lovely system.”
She said the last part with a bit of sarcasm. They weren’t a country, nor a union of people or really anything that would require them to have an economy. They were all separate entities occupying the same space and making an attempt not to murder one another. There weren’t goods being traded, simply favors being exchanged. One could argue that it was the same thing, but any sort of monetary system was quashed quickly.
Lilith felt a bit of panic from Renee and a lot of excuses and uncertainty. Lilith knew there was attraction there, but didn’t assume that Renee would act on it. That all depended on the person. She could feel emotions, not sense how they made decisions, though she could draw the conclusion.

"What isn't the correct term?" While Renee had things she was good at, political correctness was far from one of them. She would not consider herself racist, but some people might disagree. Although she wasn't super stereotypical Civil War era Confederate racist, she wasn't exactly the least racist person around either. She didn't go around hating on people just because they were a different race, but she tended to sort of feel uncomfortable around them. She'd been raised in a fairly small town where she didn't get out much, so the only people she'd ever seen who weren't "white" were random people she passed in the store or something. "Huh. Isn't that more confusing though?" she asked, regarding the system. It sounded confusing to her. She wondered if she would have to use it, and if so, if somebody would teach her. Then again, she hadn't been exactly formally taught how to use money like she was used to, either. That seemed easier to her, though. Things were given an assigned value, and you gave them that much. No bargaining necessary.
"Um, so, I uh. About your... thing..." She paused then, blushing, then quickly added, "I mean your empath-ness!" Then she realized she forgot what she was going to say. "...Never mind."

“Nevermind,” said Lilith, quite aware that being politically correct wasn’t a forefront in most minds.
Lilith shook her head, “It’s only confusing when there isn’t an equivalent exchange, but it’s corrected quickly. It’s simply how things were always done here and that’s how they will continue to be.”
That part of Hell was the least of Lilith’s concerns. There were bigger things, such as harsh punishments and unforgiving judgments and especially the fact that rarely anyone got out of here that Lilith would rather contend with other than the trading economy that Hell has set up.
Lilith smiled when Renee attempted to comment on her empathy. She was acting like a whole different person now that she had brought it up. That was actually a very good thing, in her mind.
“You can ask what you like, I have no reason to hide anything,” she said, “Especially not from you.”

Renee wondered if most of the people-- beings here even remembered what it was like being alive. She supposed it depended. Actually, how did ages even work here? "Do things here just like not age or something? Or does everyone age like a person?" She paused before adding, "Am I going to get old?" She would much prefer to stay the way she was, she thought, rather than getting old. Then again, she didn't know that she really wanted to stay fifteen years old for the rest of her 'life-or-something-like-that' (she was in Hell, after all).
She looked at the things they passed as they headed toward their destination. They were going too quickly for her to really take it all in, but she found it odd. This really wasn't how she would have pictured Hell at all. She had always heard it described of 'fiery pits of burning sinners' or whatever other odd descriptions had been used by her at the time foster parents.
"I was just wondering... is it kind of like... mind reading? Wouldn't you sometimes find out things because of it that you shouldn't know or something, sometimes?" It sounded like a useful skill, she thought, wondering if it would be possible to learn.

“I’m over 6,000 years old,” said Lilith with a concerned look on her face, “I don’t think you’ll age normally, but for now, yes.”
As Renee was, so young, it would make sense that her years would take a bit longer now that she was down here, but if they didn’t, Lilith would simply find away to stall.
Hell was really cold in a lot of places, in reality. Warmth wasn’t something Hell felt the need to administer to its tenants. Cold and wetness tended to be a lot more hopeless and a lot more annoying.
“No, it isn’t like mind reading,” she said with a warm smile over her shoulder, “Don’t worry. It’s quite unintentional and I wish I didn’t have it sometimes, and yes, often I find out things that I shouldn’t, or wish I hadn’t. No need to worry about us, though. I haven’t found or felt anything I feel is dangerous.”

"Oh," Renee said as if being over six thousand years old was the most normal thing in the world. After all, Lilith clearly must have been joking, and she wouldn't look stupid falling for it. Well... they were supposedly in Hell... but she had never believed Hell existed in the first place, so she was hesitant to accept that as truth. She was silent, in thought a while before finally asking what she had been wondering since her arrival. "Am I having some really f'ed up hallucination or something? I've never done drugs or anything that I know of, but..."
"I'm not dangerous," she replied automatically. She mentally cringed when she realized that Lilith would probably see that as a lie, and quite possibly get entirely the wrong idea. She honestly was almost positive she wouldn't be dangerous to Lilith, but toward other people, it really depended on the situation.

Lilith didn’t joke about direct questions, on top of the fact that she got a serious vibe from Renee that said she had quite a load of doubt. She also got a bit of confusion and a lot of sudden disbelief. Lilith didn’t really care that she was so ‘old’ as she didn’t look much older than her late twenties in a normal mortal’s lifespan. She blinked a few times before glancing at Renee over her shoulder.
“No, sorry to say, you are not having a hallucination. All of this is very real and that’s why we’re here,” she said, pointing out the horizon where Purgatory would be.
Lilith laughed slightly, “Renee, you really don’t need to try to convince me,” she assured, “I am perfectly aware of who you are and what you’re capable of, though I don’t think you’re quite as aware of what I can do.”

Renee looked in the direction Lilith was pointing, but she didn't really see what was so different about it from the rest of the scenery. Maybe she just wasn't looking hard enough, she wondered. Or maybe Lilith was seeing something there she wasn't? Either way, of course somebody she dreamed or hallucinated would tell her the whole thing was real. For all she knew, she was still asleep in the forest. "Right, of course," she replied, still sounding doubtful. There was no point in trying to hide it from her tone anymore, since it wasn't like Lilith wouldn't see through that anyway.
Renee wondered how much Lilith did know, and couldn't help but to doubt that she really did know everything she was 'capable of.' If she actually knew, she probably wouldn't want to be this close to her, Renee thought. "What are you capable of, then?" she asked. It was partially out of curiosity and partially like a challenge, really.

Lilith was seriously unsure of how to convince Renee all of this was real, but the fact that she thought it wasn’t could contribute to the lack of thought of consequences the girl seemed to have. She was glad for Renee’s drop of pretense in her speech. Many people still kept their speech much the same as they would speak to a child when they spoke to her, especially those of the Lords of Sin. It was bothersome and disrespectful.
Lilith had a smile across her pale face, “I’m capable of many things, my dear,” she said, “Just as you are. You don’t need to have doubts in my interest in you, Renee. It’s no secret to me your past.”
It was as simple as summoning up a copy of someone’s soul, as many places had once someone was of interest. Hell had one on everyone that was hell-bound, Heaven had one on anyone dangerous; so information about Renee wasn’t exactly hidden from her.

In all truth, Renee rarely thought about the consequences before she acted, unless it was something that could get her, say, a lifetime prison sentence. However, she was generally pretty good at covering for herself when she wanted to. Lying was, in her opinion, a skill, and it was one which she had been developing her entire life.
She raised an eyebrow as Lilith said she was capable of many things just like she was. Sure, she might be technically capable - almost everybody was, very technically - but she highly doubted someone like her would actually willingly, knowingly do something that would hurt somebody. Of course, if she was in Hell, she clearly must have done something... but then again, one of her more elderly foster families had once told her everything that they thought God considered a sin and people would go to Hell for, and she thought it sounded like practically everything. Lilith knowing her past concerned her a bit, though. She wanted to know what exactly Lilith knew, but was a bit afraid to find out. She decided to ask anyway. "My past? Like... what?" She started to feel defensive, though; what business was it of other people's?
