Oh well, thought Lilith, she wasn’t refusing to come with her, so this was progress enough, she supposed. They had a long time down here, so there was time for them to talk and to grow close. Lilith hoped they would, eventually. She nodded sadly when Renee got upon the Terasque by herself. Another day, she thought.
She patted the large beast’s horn and he shot forward. Samael opened the the stable door and they were on their way. It was a bit of a journey to Purgatory, since it was kept away from the rest of the circles of hell. They didn’t want an escapee becoming a refugee there. Just another of the things that Lilith didn’t quite understand about Hell. Didn’t everyone deserve a second chance after they’ve served their penance?
“It’ll be awhile before we’re there,” she said, “Did you want to talk before we got there?”

She had to hold on to something as the Terasque gained speed, she realized, or she would fall off. She looked at the available options and saw that, really, the only thing to hold onto would be Lilith, which wasn't an idea she was particularly fond of. Still, falling off didn't seem like a great alternative, so she decided to make a slight concession on the matter. "I don't want to fall off, so..." she explained, wanting to clarify that she was not intentionally being awkward or anything.
"Talk?" she asked, "About what?" She had never been a very conversational person, so she was not very good with actually starting a conversation. Besides, there really wasn't much to say. She supposed she could bring up her thoughts on the lieutenant, but she decided that probably wasn't something Lilith wanted to hear about, considering she seemed to like Natalie. Besides, as much as Renee wouldn't admit it, part of her dislike may be attributed to jealousy...

Lilith paid nearly no mind to when Renee grabbed her to keep steady on the Terrasque. She wanted her to feel comfortable around her and this was one way of showing it. She looked back at her when she spoke.
“Don’t worry,” she said gently, “I wanted you to do that.”
She smiled, but turned back to where the Terrasque was moving, just in case they needed to stop him for one reason or another. She turned slightly to hear Renee better when she spoke.
“I don’t mind what we talk about; I want to know more about you,” she said, “I want you to know more about me.”
She truly did, so she wanted Renee to tell her a little bit first. Then she would know what she wanted to know from Lilith. She wouldn’t have minded talking about Natalie. A lot of the reason Renee and her were out here was so they could properly cooperate.

Renee wasn't really sure what to think about Lilith having wanted her to do that; there were a few ways she could take that, and she decided it would be best to not jump to the wrong conclusion. Then again, she could just ask. It might seem a little weird, though, but then again, this whole thing seemed weird to Renee. "Why?"
Although she wasn't particularly secretive about herself, for the most part, she wasn't sure what to say with something as broad as more about her. Instead, she asked one of the many things she had been wondering the last day. "So, what's up with your living in a castle and stuff? I mean, obviously because you're rich, but how? Are you like the Princess of Hell or something?" She almost immediately wished she hadn't said the last question, deciding it sounded stupid. However, she had said it now, so there was no taking it back.

Lilith smiled a little to herself, “Because I didn’t want you to fall off,” she said, “And I want you to feel more comfortable with me.”
Lilith politely listened to Renee’s question before she came up with an answer. She nearly laughed when she asked if she was a Princess of hell. That she was definitely not. She had no desire to be one of the princes of hell.
“I’m not a princess of hell,” she assured her, “I simply have worked up enough power here and have made enough friends that they take care of me here. I’m useful to many people here, as a lie detector, as an interrogator, things like that. I’m empathetic.”
She wasn’t sure if Renee would understand just how empathetic, though she’d wait for her to ask.

More comfortable? That was something Renee had heard before, and it set off warning bells in her head. Not literally, of course, and in all actuality there was no reason for her to be distrustful, but she was.
Now that she thought about it, if Lilith was a princess, that would be really difficult. There'd probably be guards everywhere, at least the way Renee pictured royalty. "So they take you in so they can use you?" she replied bluntly. That was how she saw it, and was what she was used to.
Renee raised an eyebrow at the last word, and asked "Empathetic?" Of course, she knew what the word meant - well, she was pretty sure she knew what it meant, at least - but there was something about the way Lilith had said that which made it seem as though she were prompting her to ask more about it.

Renee’s lack of comfort made Lilith feel uncomfortable in general, so striving for Renee’s comfort simply ensured her own. Lilith paused for a moment, thinking of an appropriate response to Renee’s question.
“It’s more like they allow me to live here because I’m useful, they pay me because I demand it,” she said, satisfied with that response.
It was true, if she weren’t worth anything, she’d probably be a concubine of Asmodai’s and wallow in the lust level of hell, though she wasn’t particularly guilty of that sin. She’d made a quick reputation for being rather tenacious and ballsy when she needed to be, which was often.
“Magically empathetic,” Lilith clarified, “I can feel what people feel as if it were my own emotion, it becomes quiet a nuisance when I’m trying to sort out my own feelings,” she said, nodding her head for affect. She’d normally talk with her hands, though it wasn’t very smart on the Terasque.

"Like... a job?" Renee asked, not really able to understand the concept. The fact that she had just gotten dragged out of bed may or may not have had something to do with that, but in all honesty, the fact that she tended to not really understand even most 'social norms' probably played a much bigger part in it. "A boarding house job?"
"Oh," she replied. She tried not to change her mood or anything, at least not noticeably, but she could not help but to be a bit more guarded after finding this out. She wasn't an extremely secretive person - though in some cases, she had reason to keep things to herself; certain things she had done would certainly have the possibility of quite a bit of legal trouble - but the idea of somebody more or less feeling her every thought sort of creeped her out. Deciding she wanted a different subject, she said, "So... magic is real, Hell is real... well, I always knew demons were real..." It began like a question, but trailed off at the end as she attempted to make some sort of sense of it herself.

Lilith nodded, “I get paid in power and favors, I suppose,” she said, “Rather than in money, which really has no worth here, unless you’re Mammon’s property.”
Lilith laughed lightly. She was aware that Renee must not know how long she’s lived in hell, or just how old she was. She’d lost exact count, but it was north of six thousand years. Lilith was with the opinion that she didn’t need to know, so she wasn’t about to tell her.
“That castle was a favor being repaid, a very long time ago,” she mentioned off hand.
She smiled gently as Renee began to list the things she’d now realized were real over the time they’d spent together.
“Yes, gods are real, as well, though no one in particular is in control,” she said off-hand, “Most gods in the heavens tend to be pretty hands-off of the mortal plane anyhow. The ones in the underworld are trying to bolster their ranks constantly.”

Renee tried to remember if she should know this name or not. It didn't sound familiar, so she supposed she had no way of knowing. Therefore, she should not sound stupid to ask about it. "Who's Mammon? And if you don't use money, everybody here gets what they want by like trading? Like the Indians like five thousand years ago - did they make this place?"
Asking so many questions, especially at once, was unusual for her. Still, the only way to make sense of it was to try to find a 'plot hole' sort of thing. Of course, even if it turned out to be a dream or hallucination (...this, however, she doubted; she remembered many things, and doing drugs was not one of them), she likely wouldn't realize it. That's how things generally worked in dreams, after all.
Gods, meaning more than one...? Bolster...? These particular words left her with questions, but ones she felt should be obvious. She began to feel embarrassed by her lack of knowledge, but remembered this would be felt by Lilith and instead tried to force herself back to neutrality.
It was then that she realized... had Lilith had this ability the entire time? What if she had 'misunderstood' certain things and got the 'wrong idea'? Renee still insisted that believing she had a crush on her would be a misunderstanding, obvious as it was to just about everyone except her. Besides, although she couldn't deny Lilith's attractiveness, she was definitely an adult, and she somehow struck Renee as the rule-following type.
