Hm, not in the infirmary, Marian thought. And he wasn't in the dorm halls, either. Marian realized, though, that he'd skipped the most likely place for Dago to be- Marian's room, obviously. Why not? Sometimes Marian wished that he could just snap his fingers and Dago would appear, but it wasn't just that easy.
He wasn't looking for Dago because he was horny or anything. Definitely not. He didn't even think that Dago would be in the mood for sex after this- And if Dago wasn't in the mood, then that was impressive. In a bad way.
Marian felt guilt in his gut and he tried to ignore it. It wasn't his responsibility to tell Dago who his relatives were. Still, though, he felt as though he did have some responsibility as the owner of Archer's Journal. . And as Dago's friend.
His friend. Friend. Friend. That word echoed in Marian's thoughts, and he swallowed.

Dago was sitting on the sofa in Marian’s office. He was reading a book for once, which was usually Marian’s pastime in his office. He was trying to find a name he’d heard and was just short of asking Natalie about it. She’d been around awhile; he figured that if anyone knew it, she would. Unfortunately, sitting and doing research usually made his patience wear thin, but he’d managed to gather up enough of it to do some today.
Dago was wholly unaware of the bomb Marian was about to drop on him. He didn’t pay much attention to his relatives, short of his grandmother who wasn’t on the mortal plane anymore. She hadn't talked much about them either, so Dago hadn’t ever been interested. He could barely remember his immediate parents anyway. That part of his life had a few holes in it, as trauma typically has that effect.
Dago shut the book with a snap and rubbed his forehead. He was at the end of that rope, now if only he could work a computer without getting frustrated.

Marian walked into his office and saw Dago sitting on the sofa there. He blinked and closed the door- making sure to lock it- before sitting down next to Dago. He noticed that Dago was sitting down reading something and doing research, which was odd. Dago had always hated studying. Once upon a time Marian had to teach him about racism in the justice system, and that had not been a fun night.
He cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses before speaking. "I need to talk with you," he said. "It's really important."
Marian rested his elbows on his knees and looked over at Dago. "I know it sounds really weird. . But you know your grandmother, Consuela? She was one of Dimitri's students for a while. And, uhm, she slept with him. Dimitri Archer is your grandfather," he blurted, trying not to sound too awkward. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. ."

Dago looked up when Marian walked into his office. He looked bothered for some reason. He locked the door, but the energy about him didn’t really tell Dago he was interested in fun. Marian saying he needed to talk to him confirmed this.
“Okay,” Dago said, a little unsure of where this was going.
Part of him was worried this was going to be part of some fucked up break-up where Marian decided keeping a demon in his office was a really bad idea and the only answer was to vanquish him. That wasn’t the case, not even a little bit.
He stared at Marian suspiciously for a second before responding. He recalled telling him that his grandmother had been magical, and even her name, so he jumped to conclusions.
He shook his head, looking amused, “That’s not really funny, Marian. Nice try, though.”
The fact that Marian was acting strange and that he didn’t joke like that was nagging at the back of Dago’s brain, but there was no way that could be true.

Marian shook his head. "I'm not joking, Dago," he said. "It's true. He asked me to not tell you until after he died. ." Marian felt guilty, but he convinced himself he shouldn't. It wasn't his responsibility and Dago should have been happy he'd bothered to let him know in the first place.
That was the mantra that Marian continuously repeated over and over again in his mind, because it was far easier and far better than admitting he'd done something wrong and more importantly, admitting he cared enough about someone else that he would feel guilty about not telling them something important.
It wasn't even that important anyway! It was just who his grandfather was. Dimitri was a douchebag first-class, it wasn't like Dago would be hurt by not knowing who his grandfather was. But it was too late to take the words back now, and besides, the thought of telling Dago had been nagging at him for years.

Dago didn’t look back up at Marian when he said it was true. Dago wasn’t processing this very well, he was trying to think of ways this wasn’t the case, but he had no evidence. Marian held it all.
“Wait, he… he told you, but didn’t bother to mention it to—never mind,” he said, his jaw getting a bit tight.
He knew the answer to that; Dimitri hadn’t ever hid his annoyance with Dago. There was a little bit of light shed on that, which made Dago go from flippantly annoyed to rightly pissed off. Dago wasn’t hurt by not knowing who his grandfather was, he was probably better off not knowing. He thought so now that he knew.
“Was this part of some successor debriefing? Why did he tell you?” Dago asked, raking his hand through his hair.
He couldn’t figure out how to process this immediately. He wasn’t sure if the fact that he wasn’t swearing was a good sign or a very bad one.

Marian reached into the inner pocket in his coat and pulled out Dimitri's journal. "He gave me this," he said, flipping to the entry where Dimitri found out that Consuela was pregnant before handing the journal to Dago. "He had to give me the journal, apparently. Upstairs ordered him to."
Marian ignored the first statement Dago made. It was obvious that Dimitri had a great amount of disdain for Dago. After all, Dago wasn't one of the perfect white, straight, conservative grandchildren Dimitri would have wanted. Marian found himself glad that Dago wasn't. He was far better the way he was now; Marian doubted he could stand yet another person just like the ones he'd met in school, in college, at parties, at his firm, through his father. .
Anyway. Anyway. Anyway, this was about Dago finding out that Dimitri was his grandfather, not about Marian's father and his father's little greed cult.

Dago reached out and took the journal. He glanced at the date, December 20, 1956. He quickly read the entry, unsure of what these rules were and who Hanniel was. He could guess that person was from the Upstairs, based on context, though. The bastard was talking about his grandmother just as he expected him to. He was cold and regretful of her presence, which was only marginally better than he had treated Dago.
He didn’t want to read anymore, though the curiosity was bugging him. He shut the journal and handed it back to Marian silently.
“What were the rules he talked about?” Dago said in a quiet voice.
He didn’t care so much about the person from the Upstairs, but the rules Dimitri had broken were pretty much the only reason he was sitting on this couch right now. He had half a mind to go find him in Hell and punch him out, but that wouldn’t get him anywhere.

Marian had expected Dago to be upset, so he wasn't too surprised. He was amazed Dago wasn't upset with him, but he didn't mention it. He didn't want Dago to suddenly realize that he should be upset with him. He watched Dago as the other man read the journal. Had he known Dago's thoughts about wanting to go down to Hell to punch out Dimitri, Marian wouldn't object. Dimitri was an ass.
"He couldn't be involved in worldly affairs, couldn't be involved with anyone romantically, couldn't kill anyone or knowingly lead them to their death, and finally, he wasn't allowed to tell anyone about something really big he did," Marian said. "He broke the second and the fourth one."
Marian figured he might as well explain to Dago what horrible thing Dimitri had done. It certainly would explain why the Order was so small. "Remember Haven? That woman who possessed Selene and then got her own body?" Marian asked.

Dago hadn’t even considered being upset with Marian. It wouldn’t have gotten him anywhere to know any sooner; he was barely sure he wanted to know now. Even if he could have gotten upset with Marian, he was still in shock. Any and all anger he had was directed at the correct source, in his mind.
He took a deep breath when Marian told him about the rules that Dimitri had been restricted by. Those rules made a lot of sense, especially the last one. The only information he’d ever gotten out of Dimitri about the old Order had been purely by accident.
Dago nodded, recalling that Marian mentioned Haven at some point. He couldn’t recall exactly when, but he’d heard of her. She wasn’t there anymore, that’s the important part.
This was a lot of information to process. Dago rubbed his eyes for a moment. He was pretty sure his head hurt.
